Capt. Robert J "Shorty" Rankin, Washington, DC. 61st Fighter Squadron. P-47D 42-74622 HV-H "Wicked Wacker Weegie". From the huge grin on his face and the five fingers giving the time honoured signal, it seems that this photo was taken immediately following the mission of 12 May 1944 when the then Lt. Rankin destroyed 5 Me109s air-air, North-West of Marburg.
