P-47D 42-25507 “Huckle de Buck” has long been listed in various publications as UN-A of the 63rd FS. However, there has always been a question mark over this, particularly in view of the full D-Day stripes seen in this shot and the photo immediately above showing 42-25531 UN-A prior to D-Day, and it being lost as UN-A on 18 September 1944. 42-25507 was lost on 18 June 1944 with the 509th FS 405th FG 9th AF. Logic dictates therefore that the partially viewed code is not UN of the 63rd but rather G9 0f the 509th. The 509th also used a red cowl band but as per 9th AF markings, it was a squadron designator rather than group.
