In early May 1943, members of the "Fighting 21st" were notified by the Higher Headquarters that in the future they would be known as the 486th FS, the 21st being deactivated following completion of the 352nd's transitional training. Everyone was proud to be a member of the Fightin 21st and those who had the insignia, continued wearing it at Bodney.

The Diablo artwork has been taken from Lt. Wensch’s previous P-51D 44-13805, individual code letter currently unknown, which was written off in a taxiing accident on 2 February 1945 at A-84 Chievres with Lt. Carl J Scaffone at the controls.

The a/c was repaired, returned to service, and lost shortly afterwards when Lt. Richard F Semon baled out into the North Sea on 25 August 1944. Fortunately, he was picked up by Air-Sea Rescue.
